Who Needs Omega 3 Fatty Acids? You? Your baby? Your teen? Your parents?

You’ve likely heard about the many health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids. Who needs Omega 3 Fatty Acids and are you getting enough of them in your diet?

According to experts, probably not. And most people you know — your spouse, your toddler, and your mom – probably aren’t either.

“Pretty much everybody’s diet is deficient in omega-3s,” says David C. Leopold, MD, director of integrative medical education at the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine in San Diego. “I think that’s why adding them back in seems to have so many health benefits. We’re just balancing out what’s normally” there.

Omega-3s are rapidly becoming an important tool in mainstream medicine. They seem to have health benefits for every age group – from before birth to old age. There’s conclusive evidence that they protect against heart disease and lower triglycerides. There’s also some research showing that they might help with dozens of other conditions, too.

To help you better understand the benefits — and some of the risks — of omega-3s, here’s a primer on using omega-3 fatty acids. WebMD has also surveyed the evidence of how omega-3s help four groups of people — infants, children and teens, young adults, and middle-aged to older adults.

What Are Omega-3s?

Omega-3s are essential fatty acids — we need them for our bodies to work properly. One of their most important benefits is that they seem to have an anti-inflammatory effect.

“A lot of diseases, like heart disease and arthritis, seem to be related to an inflammatory process,” says Leopold. “Omega-3s can tune down the body’s inflammation, and that may be how they help prevent some of these chronic diseases.”

So how do omega-3s benefit people at different ages? Here’s the rundown on the research.

Keep in mind that few of these studies are definitive, and larger studies are needed to determine therapeutic benefit.  Also, some studies used food sources of omega-3s, and others used omega-3 supplements.

Omega-3s for Infants, Prenatal Health, and Pregnancy

Omega-3s are important for children’s health right from the start – actually, before they’re even born. Here’s some of the evidence.

  • Cognitive development. Some studies show that infants fed formulas enriched with the omega-3 fatty acid DHA show improvements in hand-eye coordination, attention span, social skills, and intelligence test scores. Studies have shown that children born to mothers who took supplements of omega-3s (DHA and EPA) during pregnancy and the during the first months of breastfeeding scored higher on cognitive tests at 4 years of age compared to children whose mothers did not take supplements of DHA and EPA.
  • Asthma risk. A 2008 study found that the teenage children of women who took fish oil during pregnancy were less likely to have developed asthma.
  • Growth. There’s some evidence that when omega-3s are added to formula, it promotes growth and brain development in premature infants.
  • Preterm labor. A 2003 study found that women who ate eggs enriched with omega-3s were less likely to go into premature labor than women who ate standard eggs.

Although none of these studies are conclusive, there’s good reason to make sure that infants – and pregnant women — are getting their omega 3s such as DHA and EPA.

Many infant formulas are now supplemented with DHA. A mother’s breast milk is an ideal source of omega-3s, although it may be affected by how many omega-3s she’s getting in her diet.

Omega-3s for Children and Teens

Some of the childhood conditions that have been studied include:

  • ADHD. Kids with ADHD may have lower levels of omega-3s in their bodies than normal, and a few small studies have looked at fish oil supplements as a treatment. They found that the supplements might improve behavior, reduce hyperactivity, and boost attention in kids under 12.
  • Depression. Fish oil is often used as a treatment for depression in adults; there have been a few studies in children too. One small 2006 study of fish oil in depressed 6- to 12-year-olds found it helped their symptoms significantly.
  • Diabetes. One small study looked at kids who were at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The researchers found that those who ate a high omega-3 diet were less likely to develop the condition.
  • Asthma. Omega-3s may reduce inflammation in the airways, which could benefit those with asthma. One small study of 29 children with asthma found that those taking fish oil for 10 months had fewer symptoms than those who didn’t. However, other studies of omega-3s as an asthma treatment have not found consistent evidence that they help.

Keep in mind that many of these studies were small and other studies have sometimes found contradictory evidence. More research needs to be done before we’ll know the full implications.

Omega-3s for Young Adults

As an age group, young adults tend to be pretty healthy. But it’s a good time to start thinking ahead and considering your health in the long-term. So how can omega-3s help?

  • Cardiovascular health. Studies have found that people who eat fatty fish twice a week have lower rates of heart disease. One study found that fish oil – in foods or supplements – cut the risk of death from cardiovascular disease by 32%. People with documented heart disease are advised to get about 1 gram of omega-3s from fish oil per day or to consider EPA plus DHA supplements.
  • Cancer. So far, the evidence is not very strong. But a number of studies have noted that people who take in higher amounts of omega-3s seem to have lower levels of certain cancers. These include cancers of the breast, prostate, colon, ovaries, esophagus, and others. Are the omega-3s really responsible? It’s impossible to say. But the evidence is promising and more research needs to be done.
  • Depression and other psychiatric conditions . There’s some fairly good evidence that omega-3s can play a role in brain chemistry and a number of studies have found some benefits. Several studies have found that blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids are lower in those who suffer from depression .

“We have studies showing that countries that have healthier diets — with more vegetables and fish — tend to have a lower incidence of depression than western countries,” says Ronald Glick, MD, medical director of the Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

At least a few studies have found that adding omega-3s supplements is beneficial for those suffering from depression. For instance, fish oil does seem to boost the effectiveness of some antidepressants. There’s also some early evidence that omega-3s might help with schizophrenia and the depressive symptoms of bipolar disorder. There’s some conflicting evidence that omega-3s may help with other conditions — ranging from skin conditions to painful menstruation to Crohn’s disease. More evidence is needed to determine whether omega-3 supplements benefit people with inflammatory bowel disease.

As you get older, the risks of serious conditions like heart disease grow. The good news is that omega-3s have their best established benefits in people of this age group.

  • Heart health. “Omega-3s have enormous benefits from a cardiovascular standpoint,” says Erminia M. Guarneri, MD, a cardiologist and medical director of the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine. Not only do they help prevent problems in healthy people, they also cut the risk of complications and death in people who already have heart disease. Omega-3s seem to help keep the heart rhythm steady. One study found that people who had already had a heart attack and took fish oil had a 45% decrease in the risk of heart-related death. Fish and fish oil also seem to slow down arteriosclerosis and lower the risk of strokes.
  • Triglycerides. The omega-3s — DHA and EPA — can slash triglyceride levels by 20% to 50%. The effect seems to depend on the amount, so your doctor might recommend fairly high doses. The effects of omega-3s on other types of cholesterol are less clear.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis. While the evidence isn’t conclusive, a number of studies have found that fish oil can reduce rheumatoid arthritis symptoms, like morning stiffness and pain. High doses – of 3 to 4 grams — may be necessary. No one should be on such a large dose without the supervision of a doctor.
  • Osteoporosis. Studies have found that people who eat higher levels of fatty fish than average have greater bone density in the hip. One study found that fish oil – in combination with calcium and primrose oil – increased bone density in older people with osteoporosis.
  • Memory, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease. Several studies have found that diets high in fatty fish may help prevent memory loss and lower the risk of dementia in older people. However, other studies have not found a benefit. Recent studies have also evaluated whether the omega-3 supplement DHA can slow the decline seen in people with Alzheimer’s dementia or in age-associated memory impairment. One recent study showed that DHA can be a beneficial supplement and may have a positive effect on gradual memory loss associated with aging.

How Should I Get More Omega-3s?

What’s the best way to get your omega-3s? Improve your diet, experts say.

Fatty fish are a good source of DHA and EPA. Although there are plant sources of omega-3s – in foods like flax, olive oil, and some leafy greens – they don’t seem to be quite as effective. Plants contain a fatty acid called ALA, which has to be broken down into DHA and EPA in the body. Many food products are fortified with algae oil and can be a good source of DHA.

Children and women who are breastfeeding or pregnant must be careful of the toxins that can build up in some seafood, such as shark, swordfish, and tilefish. They should eat smaller fatty fish – like salmon and trout – and eat no more than 12 ounces a week.

What about omega-3 supplements? Although getting nutrients from food is always preferable, adding a supplement might be smart. Also many foods are now fortified with omega-3s, such as some milk products, juices, breads, eggs, cooking oils, and snack foods.

“Omega -3 supplements are extremely safe for most people,” says Leopold. He cautions that anyone with a bleeding disorder – or who takes a medicine that could affect bleeding, like the blood thinner Coumadin – needs to talk to a doctor first before taking fish oils. Evidence suggests that eating less than 3 grams a day is unlikely to result in bleeding.

Are omega-3 supplements for children an option? “While you must talk to a pediatrician first, I don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t consider giving an appropriate dosage of omega-3 supplements to a child,” Leopold tells WebMD. Just keep in mind that a doctor needs to work out the correct dosage.

Omega-3s: A Not-So-Alternative Treatment

Although many people might consider omega-3 fatty acids an “alternative” medicine, experts stress that omega 3s are really a complementary treatment. They seem to work best not on their own, but side by side with traditional medicine, often amplifying the effects of prescription drugs.

“Omega-3s may not replace your medicines for arthritis or depression,” says Gail Underbakke, RD, nutrition coordinator of the Preventative Cardiology Program at the University of Wisconsin Hospital. “But they might allow you to take lower doses of those drugs.”

So don’t look at omega-3s as an alternative treatment that you administer by yourself. Instead, discuss omega-3 supplements or fortified foods with your doctor. Figure out how you should be using omega-3s – and at what dose — in the context of your overall health and treatment. And make sure that you don’t have any medical conditions – or take any medicines – that would make omega-3s too risky.

“With a few exceptions, I don’t think there’s any problem with the average person taking a fish oil supplement daily, like a multivitamin,” says Guarneri. “By and large, an extra gram of fish oil is only going to help you.”

How much water should I be drinking on a daily basis?

We recommend a minimum of 60 –80 oz. of water per day! A good rule of thumb is to take your weight and divide by 2.  This would be the number of ounces of water you need to drink per day.  (140 pounds = 70 oz of water )  While this may sound like a lot initially, it is very easy to do with just a little dedicated effort and planning! Get a couple of containers, take one with you each day and make a concerted effort to get at least 40 oz. in before lunch! After a few days, you will not be thinking about it at all. It becomes a necessary habit!  With the new Daily Guide, it is easy to keep track of your water consumption.

 Why do you recommend the Meal Replacement Shake for breakfast every morning?

How often should I get on the scale?

Can I mix the Meal Replacement Shake with milk, juice or add fruit to it?

No! Additions such as these change the protein to carb ratio as well as the caloric count! Only someone who is after weight gain would want to consider such an option and even then, we suggest you discuss this with your Challenge coach before implementing!

When should I take Catalyst and how many can I take in a day?

Catalyst can be used upon waking, if your first meal of the day will not be eaten within 1 hour, as a mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack, immediately before a workout or right before bed, as your late-night snack. There is no real limit on Catalyst but most people will not need more than 3 servings per day as whole food is still the primary goal.

If I am using ThermoPlus during the Max Phase as an add-on, how should I take it for best results?

You can take 1-3 capsules of ThermoPlus within 30 minutes of a meal. Start out with 1 capsule per serving per day and gradually increase for higher response.

How many OmegaPlex can or should I be taking each day?

A minimum of two OmegaPlex capsules should be taken each day, and it is recommended you take two twice a day, but if you are battling obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes, you may want to take more! Always consult your doctor first though!  OmegaPlex should be taken with a meal.

Can I use the Meal Replacement Shakes for lunch or dinner if I need to?

Yes, in a pinch, they can be used to replace any meal or snack, however, always keep in mind, whole food should be your first choice outside of your Meal Replacement Shake at breakfast. If it came down to no meal versus having a shake, then yes, have a shake!

In the Max Phase do I still take OmegaPlex even though they are included in the MNS Strip Packs?

Depending on which MNS product you are using, you will have either one or two OmegaPlex capsules included. As noted above, you want to make sure you are getting a minimum of two capsules per day and if you are battling any of the noted issues, maybe even more.

The scale is not moving as fast as I thought it would, but my clothes are definitely looser. Am I doing something wrong?

The scale is the LAST place that will typically show results when it comes to “healthy” fat loss. Most commonly you will notice your clothes fitting looser, due to the density of fat versus muscle, before seeing the scale drop! This will be followed by family and friends noticing a change, before the scale shows anything drastic in the way of number fluctuations. All too often the scale can actually be misleading as the body goes through changes on a daily basis. This is why you are not allowed on the scale until the days noted!  Use your daily guide to ensure you are eating enough of the appropriate foods, and getting enough water.

I got a slight headache during the Cleanse Phase. What could cause this?

This could actually be caused by a variety of things, none of which will be a major cause for concern and they should be gone altogether by Days 4 or 5! Some individuals do get minor headaches during the Cleanse caused by not be drinking their daily required water intake and some may simply be going through a release of toxins (a good thing, and most likely much needed as well).  The water is required to help your body flush out those toxins.  That is the goal of the Cleanse, to remove the toxins and allow you to bring back in the healthy bacteria.

I take medications for different ailments; will they be affected by the Challenge?

We cannot and do not make any sort of medical claims, nor will your coach make any recommendations as it relates to your medication use or medical issues. Although what we do is based on good, solid nutrition, it is a common “industry” recommendation to simply not take your supplementation solutions at the same time you take any medications, but as you are most likely aware, it is strongly recommended that you consult your physician directly.

Can I use some other supplements or vitamins that I already have during the Challenge?

Can you? Yes. Do we recommend it? No! This is not to imply that they are unfit for use, simply to say that we can only speak for results and the credibility of AdvoCare products and our recommendation is always to simply suspend the use of all non-AdvoCare supplementation solutions during the Challenge. This is not meant to imply that post-Challenge you may not be able to put them back in use, but simply to ensure that ONLY those products which we know are built to work synergistically together are used during the Challenge itself.

How soon can I do another Cleanse?

You should not Cleanse more than once every 90 days so you can simply look at your Cleanse as a quarterly proactive maintenance plan!

What do I do after my Challenge is over?

Very good question…unfortunately, not one that can be answered in a FAQ response due to the individuality of each person and their goals. Our general recommendation for anyone completing their Challenge and either looking to lose a bit more or simply maintain is to repeat the Max Phase as their post-Challenge plan, but to be perfectly honest, you should be discussing your next step with your Challenge coach ASAP. They can help you make sure you get exactly, and more importantly, only what you need from an AdvoCare solutions standpoint, in order to reach your next health, fitness or wellness goal. Western societies are facing a series of major challenges that represent a potential healthcare tsunami in the next few decades. They are the combined forces of the population demographic group known as the Baby Boomers (those born between 1946 – 1964) and consequences of altered diet and lifestyle resulting in obesity. Thus, the elderly population is growing in stature – both physically and numerically.

Given the expanding numbers of the older population and the burden that their numbers and poor health have on healthcare resources, it is timely to evaluate the determinants of healthy aging. If we could direct efforts early so this population bubble was in better health as they age, it would have dramatic effects on the costs to society. So what are the predictors of healthy aging?

A recent publication out of Harvard in the British Medical Journal (Sun et al., 2009) shed some important insight. Using data from the Nurses Health study they determined that weight gain at middle age was a strong predictor for health at age 70. This was a prospective study where over 17,000 nurses were evaluated from 1976 (at a mean age of 50) to 2000. Being healthy was defined as being free of cognitive, mental health or physical health deficits as well as free of 11 major chronic illnesses. The latter were diseases like cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple sclerosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease etc.

Stunningly only 9.9% on nurses that enrolled in the study in 1976 were healthy at age 70! In other words over more than 9 out 10 were unhealthy as they aged. After adjustments for lifestyles and dietary variables a major determinant of healthy aging was weight at middles age. Indeed it was linearly related, so that for every 2.2 pounds of weight put on between the ages of 18 and 50, the chances of being healthy at 70 went down by 5%. So if you gained 22 pounds your chances were reduced by 50%. Do your own personal math and calculate your risk. Frightening and this is for the population that lived to age 70. The focus was on healthy aging not longevity.

The lowest odds for healthy aging were those that were overweight at age 18 and gained more weight with age. Indeed, in this study 37% of the participants had both a chronic disease and at least one limitation (physical, mental or cognitive) and 55% had more than one limitation. In contrast if you maintained a healthy and stable body weight your chances for healthy aging improved dramatically.

The study pointed out some of the attributes that were associated with those that aged in a healthy manner versus those that did not. These include:

  • More physically active
  • Lower dietary intake of saturated fatty acids, trans fats and red meat
  • Higher dietary intake of PUFA /Saturated fats, alcohol intake, cereal fiber and fruits & vegetables.
  • Less likely to be a smoker
  • Better educated

It appears that choices are major determinants of healthy aging, especially choices related to obesity and weight gain. Those individuals that maintain a stable healthy weight over their lifetime are far more likely to enjoy a healthy status as elderly citizens. This has a massive bearing on societal issues as noted at the beginning given the population bubble of Baby Boomers and the costs associated with managing poor health and aging.

Apparently size matters, and healthy aging is certainly determined by weight gain in adulthood.

Our story is simple. We’d been inner city youth directors in Ohio for five years and felt the call to be church planters and get back to our home state of Tennessee.

In the fall of 2007 we moved to Dallas en route to Nashville, Tenn. to pursue our calling. This would be a relaxing, stress free move and everything would flow seamlessly together – so we thought.

Three months into our stay the economy began to plummet, and we ended up taking on extra jobs just to keep our heads above water.
